Urinary tract infection (UTI) treatment and prevention
D Mannose is thought to prevent certain bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract. D Mannose receptors are part of the protective covering of cells in the urinary tract. These receptors can bind to E. coli and be flushed away during urination, thus preventing the adhesion and invasion of urothelial cells.
A 2014 study published in the World Journal of Urology divided 308 women with a history of recurrent UTIs who had received initial antibiotic therapy into three groups. The first group took 2 grams of pure D mannose powder with 200 ml of water daily for six months. The second group received 50 milligrams of furanoxin (an antibiotic) daily, and the third group did not receive any additional treatment.
Overall, 98 patients had recurrent UTIs. Of these women, 15 were in the D-mannose group, 21 in the nitrofurantoin group, and 62 in the untreated group. Both treatment modalities were well tolerated by patients in both activity groups. Overall, 17.9% of patients reported minor side effects, with patients in the D-mannose group having a significantly lower risk of experiencing side effects compared with the furanotoxin group.
Researchers concluded that pure D mannose powder significantly reduced the risk of recurrence of UTIs. It may be useful in preventing urinary tract infections, although more research is needed to confirm these results.
