A 2016 study published in the journal *Nutritionals* showed that elderberry supplements significantly relieved cold symptoms in long-haul air travelers. The study, conducted by researchers from Griffith University and other institutions in Australia, included 312 passengers traveling from Australia to overseas destinations.

The results showed that compared to the placebo group, travelers taking elderberry extract (600-900 mg daily, containing 90-135 mg of anthocyanins) experienced an average reduction of approximately 2 days in the duration of their colds (4.75 days in the elderberry group vs. 6.88 days in the placebo group), and also had significantly lower cold symptom scores (247 vs. 583). Although there was no significant difference in the number of cold episodes between the two groups, the total number of days with colds in the elderberry group (57 days) was significantly less than that in the placebo group (117 days).

Furthermore, the study observed a stabilizing effect of elderberry on travelers' physical health. Participants taking elderberry maintained relatively stable health scores during their trip, while the placebo group experienced a significant decline. Regarding mental health, both groups showed improvement, which the study attributes to the positive effects of the vacation itself. No adverse reactions directly related to elderberry were found in the trial, indicating its good safety profile at recommended dosages.

This study provides the first clinical evidence of the beneficial effects of elderberry on respiratory symptoms during long-haul flights, supporting its use as a nutritional supplement to improve cold symptoms.
