This study elucidates the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of phycocyanin both directly and indirectly. Directly, phycocyanin inhibits the activation of multiple classical inflammatory signaling pathways, including the NF-κB pathway, the Toll-like receptor (TLR) pathway, and the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. By blocking these pathways, phycocyanin effectively reduces the release of inflammatory factors, inhibiting the occurrence and development of inflammatory responses at their source. Indirectly, phycocyanin significantly upregulates Nrf2 expression, thereby activating its downstream antioxidant enzyme system, enhancing the body's ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), and indirectly alleviating tissue inflammation by reducing oxidative stress.

The study showed that phycocyanin exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity in different inflammation models:

Inflammation-related biochemical markers: Phycocyanin significantly reduced the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) at sites of inflammation—MPO is a marker of neutrophil infiltration, and decreased MPO activity indicates reduced recruitment of inflammatory cells.

Pycocyanin also reduced the production of prostaglandin E-2 (PGE-2), a key inflammatory mediator that triggers pain and swelling; its decreased level directly reflects anti-inflammatory effects.​​​​​​​

Furthermore, phycocyanin inhibited histamine release, an important mediator in allergic and inflammatory responses. This effect suggests that phycocyanin may also have a potential ameliorative effect on allergic inflammation.
