Product Introduction
What Is Ambroxan?
Pure ambroxan, also known as bicyclic dihydrohomofarnesol, is a chemical with an ambergris aroma and is commonly used as a fragrance ingredient in fine perfumes and cosmetics. It is a synthetic fragrance used as a natural ambergris substitute. Ambroxan is one of the key active ingredients in natural ambergris tincture, possessing a soft, long-lasting, and stable animal-like ambergris aroma with a gentle woody undertone. Ambroxan is a precious ambergris raw material with a strong, distinctive ambergris aroma. Its unique fixative properties have earned it the nickname "the soul of ambergris." It has been used as a natural ambergris substitute in fine perfumes and cosmetic fragrances. Because it is non-irritating to humans and non-allergenic to animals, it is ideal for perfumery on skin, hair, and fabrics. It is also widely used as a fixative and fragrance ingredient in the cosmetics, food, and tobacco industries. Currently, there are two methods for preparing ambroxan: using sclareol as a raw material or oxidizing, reducing, and dehydrating ambergris.

Main Functions of Pure Ambroxan
Fixative
This is one of its most important functions. Fixatives don't directly "fix" other aroma molecules. Instead, through their own long-lasting, stable aroma, they create a base, allowing the more volatile top and body notes to develop more smoothly and sustainably. Ambroxan can significantly extend the overall longevity of a perfume.
Core Note
It is a captivating primary note in its own right. Pure Ambroxan often features prominently in many modern amber, woody, and chypre fragrances, lending warmth, sensuality, and depth.
Enhancing Texture
Even when not a primary note, a small amount in many fragrances can add depth, warmth, and roundness to the overall fragrance structure, making the scent richer and more sophisticated.
Main Applications of Pure Ambroxan
Perfume and Cosmetic Fragrances
Pure Ambroxan is commonly used in high-end perfumes and cosmetics due to its unique ambergris aroma, significantly enhancing the fragrance's diffusion properties.

Personal Care Products
Because it is non-irritating, Ambroxan is suitable for fragrance applications on skin, hair, and fabrics, such as soaps, talcum powders, creams, and shampoos, serving as both a flavoring agent and a fixative.
Tobacco Industry
Ambroxan is a key flavoring ingredient in cigarettes, blending harmoniously with the characteristic aroma of tobacco, masking unpleasant odors and improving the flavor quality of tobacco even in trace amounts.
Food Additives
Ambroxan may also be used as a food additive to impart a distinctive aroma to foods
Ambroxan: A Powerful Fixative for Perfumes
What is a Fixative?
Fixatives act as a "stabilizer" for perfumes, slowing the evaporation of the fragrance and ensuring a balanced release of the top, middle, and base notes, preventing the scent from being too pungent or too short-lasting. The longevity of a perfume is affected by many factors, including the characteristics of the fragrance, the concentration of the fragrance, the ambient temperature, and the amount of spray applied. To reduce these factors and extend the longevity of the fragrance, fixatives are added to perfume formulas. They are a crucial ingredient in fragrances.
How Fixatives Work?
Fixatives are typically the largest or heaviest molecules in a fragrance. They primarily slow evaporation in three ways:
Fixatives form a permeable film on the surface of the fixed molecules, enveloping smaller, more volatile molecules and thus slowing their release.
Fixatives reduce the vapor pressure of the fragrance, enhancing the attraction between the molecules. In simple terms, this makes the molecules more tightly attracted to each other, preventing them from evaporating.
Fixatives can increase the concentration or viscosity of a fragrance. This change in physical state can also slow evaporation.
Types of Fixatives
Common fixatives fall into three main categories: botanical, animal-based, and synthetic.
Botanical Fixatives
Botanical fixatives are widely used. The most common are woody fragrances, such as vetiver and sandalwood. They often appear in the base notes of perfumes, enriching the aroma while also prolonging the fragrance. Some herbal fragrances, such as orris root and vanilla, also have the ability to prolong the fragrance due to their stable molecular structure. Resin-based fragrances, such as frankincense and myrrh, are also common botanical fixatives.

Animal-based Fixatives
Natural animal fragrances, such as musk (now banned), civet, castoreum, and ambergris, not only have a unique aroma but also have the ability to prolong the fragrance.
Among them, musk and ambergris are the most popular among perfumers. Musk has a long-lasting fragrance and strong diffusion, which can balance out discordant notes in perfumes. Ambergris also provides excellent fixative properties without the cloying, animalic feel. Due to animal protection regulations and cost considerations, natural animal fragrances are now almost completely eliminated from perfumes, replaced by synthetic ones.
Synthetic Fixatives
Because natural fragrances suffer from instability and high prices, synthetic fixatives are particularly important. Macrocyclic and polycyclic musks are natural musk substitutes. They not only mimic the warm, sensual aroma of natural musk, but also possess excellent fixative properties. Among them is pure ambroxan, a synthetic alternative to ambergris.
