What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic Acid Bulk, molecular formula C9H16O4, CAS 123-99-9, is a natural saturated dicarboxylic acid, white or off-white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water, ether, easily soluble in ethanol. It has antibacterial, acne-dissolving, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and tyrosinase-inhibiting effects, and is well-known in acne treatment. It has no photosensitivity and can be used during the day. Compared with common organic acids such as salicylic acid and fruit acid, it is less irritating and milder.It has been used for 50 years, after research, scientists also can find it in the secretions of some plants and microorganisms in nature, but the content is too low. What Is The Characteristics?

1) It is not photosensitive and can be used during the day.

1) Antibacterial

Azelaic Acid: Efficacy in Treating Mild to Moderate Acne Vulgaris

A study observed the efficacy and safety of 15% azelaic acid in treating mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Thirty-three patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were included. 15% azelaic acid was applied topically to the entire face twice daily for 8 weeks. Follow-up was conducted at pre-treatment, week 2, week 4, and week 8. The counts of inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions, IGA scores, VISIA imaging, skin physiological parameters, patient self-reports of acne improvement, and adverse reactions were recorded.

Results

Compared to pre-treatment levels, the count of non-inflammatory acne lesions decreased by 17.1% at week 2 (P<0.05), and by week 8, the counts of non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions decreased by 46.4% and 34.3%, respectively (P<0.05). IGA scores showed a decreasing trend with prolonged use (P<0.05), and by week 8, 96.4% of patients reported varying degrees of improvement in their acne.

Skin physiological parameters showed that transepidermal water loss and pH value decreased at weeks 2, 4, and 8 compared to baseline (P<0.05), while stratum corneum water content and sebum secretion rate showed no statistically significant differences compared to baseline (P>0.05).

In the initial stage of use, some patients experienced mild itching, burning, and stinging discomfort; with prolonged use, these symptoms lessened or disappeared, and no patients withdrew from the study due to adverse reactions.

Experimental Conclusion

15% azelaic acid can rapidly and effectively reduce the number of non-inflammatory acne lesions and also has some effect on inflammatory lesions; it has low irritation and can be used as an adjunct treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris.
